How to Measure Your Feet for Custom Barefoot Shoes

At Bespoke Barefoot, every pair of shoes is handmade using your individual measurements. To ensure the best possible fit, follow the detailed instructions below. These steps are designed to be easy to do at home with just a few common tools.

Who Should Measure?

Everyone! Whether your feet are wide, narrow, flat, or high-arched, accurate measurements ensure a truly custom fit.

Tools You Will Need

  • Blank paper (A4 or larger)
  • Pen or pencil
  • Ruler or measuring tape (preferably flexible)
  • Wall or hard vertical surface

Required Measurements

1. Foot Length (Heel-to-Toe) — Wall Method

This is the most accurate way to get your foot length.

Steps:

  1. Place a blank sheet of paper on a hard floor, with one edge flush against a wall.
  2. Stand on the paper barefoot with your heel lightly touching the wall.
  3. Make sure your weight is equally distributed.
  4. Mark the paper at the tip of your longest toe.
  5. Measure from the edge of the paper (where your heel touched the wall) to the toe mark.
  6. Record the length in centimeters and millimeters, and round up to the nearest mm.
  7. Repeat for the other foot.

Note: Your left and right foot may differ slightly. Please measure and submit both.

2. Foot Width (Volume Method)

We prefer a volumetric width measurement using soft tape or string.

Steps:

  1. Sit in a chair and place your foot flat on the floor.
  2. Using a flexible measuring tape or string, wrap around the widest part of your foot (usually around the ball of the foot).
  3. Measure snugly but not tightly.
  4. Mark the overlap point, lay the string flat (if used), and measure with a ruler.
  5. Record the measurement in cm and mm. Round up.

Backup Method: If you do not have flexible tape or string, you can trace your foot on paper while standing and measure the widest horizontal distance across the foot.

Optional Adjustments & Measurements

3. Toe Box Width Preference

We offer three levels of toe box volume:

  • Regular Shoe: Snug like a traditional shoe.
  • Barefoot Standard: Natural toe splay but still clean lines.
  • Barefoot Max: Maximum spread space for toes.

Please choose one based on your preference or activity level.

4. Ankle Circumference (optional)

Especially helpful for high-top or snug ankle designs.

Steps:

  • Use a flexible tape to wrap around the narrowest point above your ankle bone.
  • Stand naturally.
  • Record the value in cm/mm and round up.

5. Arch Circumference (optional)

Helpful for users with high or flat arches.

Steps:

  • Wrap the flexible tape or string around your foot’s arch (from top to bottom, at the highest point of the arch).
  • Record the snug but not tight value in cm/mm.

Tips for Best Accuracy

  • Measure your feet at the end of the day, when they are most expanded.
  • Measure both feet and use the larger measurements.
  • Measure in centimeters and millimeters only.
  • Always round up to the nearest millimeter.
  • Do not trace your foot for length; always use the wall method.

A Note on Craftsmanship

Cobblers have measured feet for centuries. We honor that legacy with every pair we make. Traditional shoemaking uses wooden “lasts” — foot-shaped molds — and your last will be custom-made based on your data. Each shoe is handcrafted in Bogotá, Colombia using your unique specifications.
